LAST WEEK:

Markets:  They seemed to shrug off the Fed’s lack of action, and rebounded last week.

S&P roller coaster last week:  Up significantly, Down, Up, Down a touch, and Up a lot.

Factory orders:   They dropped from +8.2% (May) to -4.8% (June).  

Fed Balance Sheet:  $6.641 Trillion. 

ISM:  The Institute for Supply Management’s Services index dropped from 50.8 (June) down to 50.1 (July).  Two weeks ago, their Manufacturing index dropped from 49.0 (June) to 48.0 (July).   Services represents 70%, while Manufacturing represents 30% of the US economy.  A number above 50 represents expansion, while a number below 50 represents a contraction.   

Jobless claims:  The weekly number came in at 226,000.  The four-week average came in at 221,000.

National Debt:  $37.218 Trillion.  (It’s going up about $28-30 Billion/week.)

Trade Deficit:  It was -60 Billion (June).

THIS WEEK:

Focus of the week:  Inflation.   Consumer Inflation (the CPI) is expected to rise a touch from 2.7% up to 2.8%.  That number comes out Tuesday morning.  Wholesale Inflation (the PPI) is expected to rise from 2.3% up to 2.6%.   That number comes out on Thursday morning.  

Calendar:   The CPI (Tue); the PPI, jobless claims (Thu); industrial production and retail sales (Fri).

Earnings:  Some of the companies reporting this week are:  Allianz, Applied Materials, Cisco, Deere, and Siemens.
